Most were lost either at the Battle of Portland, or the Battle of the Gabbard, in 1653. As more ships were hired by the Directors, it is unclear if they remained within the numbers, by just hiring replacement ships for he losses. In the storm in late 1653, Directors' ships were particularly vulnerable, as they were not as well equipped with anchors and cables. They were also not as strongly built as warships.
